Conceptual Practice
Welcome. My name is Janani and I am an artist and art therapist based in Sydney, Australia. I have always loved creating art, but my relationship with artmaking as a deep, spiritual and healing experience began after particularly challenging period in my life. I began to explore and express my feelings through art and writing and, for the first time in my life, I felt connected and in tune with myself. It was as if I was meeting my soul for the first time. This process of ‘rewriting’ my life became healing and cathartic and formed the foundation of my practice which is focused on harnessing the power of creating, understanding and viewing art to heal. Through my art and art therapy sessions, I invite you to explore aspects of the human condition with greater ease, freedom and courage.
Storytelling is the foundation of my artmaking practice. Coming from a Sri Lankan background, I grew up being exposed to rich folktales and beautiful pieces of art that capture these stories. I believe that our lives are a cumulation of thousands of stories. Some of these stories leave us stuck in the past, causing us to relive negative patterns, while others ignite, inspire and encourage us to keep going and growing. Every story deserves to be seen, told, accepted and released. My artworks share stories about all parts of the human experience. Each artwork is carefully curated with symbolism, colour and meaning to infuse the energy of the piece into the aesthetic. By storytelling through art, I hope to honour, celebrate and rewrite the human condition to promote healing, self-discovery and create
timeless pieces that can be handed down generations.
Art Therapy
I believe that creating art is the sacred pathway to connect with the soul. It is the language that allows us to connect with the depths of our inner world and investigate hidden truths and emotions.

Artmaking Practice
Much like my conceptual practice of understanding how the multifaceted and diverse facets of our psyche shape our experience of the world, my artmaking practice embodies the concept of being multimodal. I have always loved creating through traditional methods of artmaking such as drawing and painting, but have long been fascinated by the potential of digital technology to add another dimension to art. My artmaking practice combines digital and traditional artmaking techniques to create art that is reflective and relevant to the contemporary context in which we live. My multimodal art practice includes using gouache, watercolour, acrylics and alcohol inks and then using digital technologies such as Photoshop and Lightroom to add another dimension to some of the artworks. The final artworks are in the form of either digital art, giclee prints or hand painted artworks. All my artworks are separated into collections and each collection carries its own theme. Additionally, I create custom artworks for my clients, and these are unique originals that are entirely customisable to the client and their story.
