Caring For Your Artwork
In order to preserve the longevity of your giclee print, the artworks should be handled carefully. Pigment inks and archival paper will ensure that under the right environmental conditions, your artwork will last up to 100 years. Follow these tips to ensure maximum longevity.
- Avoid direct sunlight.
- Dirt, dust, chemicals, cleaning agents, moisture, oils, heat and anything that could scratch or dent the paper should not come into contact with your artwork.
- Use clean, dry hands or cotton gloves when handling the artwork as skin oils can damage the paper.
- Avoid touching the face of the artwork as over time finger smudges will appear.
- Handle the artwork with two hands, touching only the underside and supporting it evenly when lifting.
- Keep the artwork covered with acid-free tissue paper (tissue paper used in packaging is all acid free) until you frame it.
- Avoid using your hands to wipe of dust as this can damage the surface of the giclee artwork. You can use a dry, clean, white lint-free cloth if need be.
- To flatten your rolled up giclee artwork first find a surface that is clean, flat, smooth and hard. Carefully remove the artwork from the postal tube and lay the artwork out on the flat surface with the image side up. Make sure the acid-free tissue paper is still covering the artwork. Place a few heavy, clean and dry objects like books on the ends and middle of the artwork. Let it sit like that overnight, if it is still not flat, let it sit for a few more hours.
- Do not use any steam, moisture or hot iron to flatten it as this will ruin the artwork.
Framing
Framing extends and protects the life of the artwork. It can also enhance the overall aesthetic of the artwork.
- It is recommended that you get your artwork professionally framed.
- Archival, acid-free materials are recommended to maximise the life of the artwork.
- UV protected, non-reflective glass is ideal for displaying and protecting your artwork.
- Choose a frame colour that complements the artwork and doesn’t draw attention away from it.
HAND PAINTED ARTWORKS
Handling
- Always handle the artwork with clean, dry hands to avoid transferring oils or dirt onto the surface.
- Use gloves if necessary to prevent fingerprints or smudges, especially on resin-coated surfaces.
Cleaning
- Dust the artwork regularly with a soft, dry microfiber cloth or a feather duster to avoid scratching the surface.
- For deeper cleaning, lightly dampen the cloth with water or a mild, pH-balanced cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage the artwork or its finish.
- Do not use alcohol-based cleaners or solvents, as they can dissolve the alcohol inks and acrylic paint layers.
Storage
- Store the artwork in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat sources, or excessive humidity to prevent warping or discoloration.
- If storing the artwork vertically, ensure it is well-supported to prevent bending or sagging.
Display
- Hang the artwork away from direct sunlight and sources of heat to prevent fading or yellowing of the resin and colours.
- Use UV-protective glass or acrylic if framing the artwork to further shield it from harmful light exposure.
Maintenance
- Inspect the artwork periodically for any signs of damage, such as cracks or chips in the resin coating.
- If damage is noticed, consult a professional conservator for repairs to ensure the artwork's integrity is preserved.
Transportation
- When transporting the artwork, handle it with extreme care and consider using protective packaging such as bubble wrap or foam to prevent any accidental damage.
- Avoid stacking or placing heavy objects on top of the artwork during transportation to prevent deformation or breakage.
